Academy of Maritime Education & Training (AMET University), Kanathur was established in 1993. AMET is a private enterprise promoted by Smt. Pattammal Educational and Charitable Trust. Mr.J.Ramachandran is the Chancellor of the Trust. He is also the Chairman of NAESEY (New Era Association of Educated Self Employed Youth). Through NAESEY he has generated thousands of jobs for unemployed graduates in Tamil Nadu. AMET caters to the needs of the Shipping Industry not only in India, but worldwide. AMET is the first Maritime Academy in India to have its Quality Management System certified to conform to ISO Standards. AMET is certified to ISO 9001:2000 QMS Standard by Det Norske Veritas till 2010 for Design, Development and Conducting Maritime Training Courses, Programmes, Examinations and Assessments. AMET has signed a MOU with AP Moller Singapore to train 300 cadets per year in dual competency. AMET was able to tie up with many international maritime colleges like South Tyneside College, Hull College, Glasgow College of Nautical Sciences etc. During the early stages AMET was affiliated to Birla Institute of Technology Mesra( BIT Ranchi). It was BIT Ranchi who gave certificates to marine engineering, nautical science, GME AND, management students. In 2007 AMET was given university status by Ministry of HRD, India under de-novo category. NAVAL ARCHITECTURE Dept. was founded in 2007 , making the University one among the 5 institutes having this Dept.
